Hartvigson with one catch as Team USA wins

Michael Hartvigson of Bothell High, who is set to sign with UW on Wednesday, made one catch for seven yards playing tight end as Team USA beat Team World 17-0 in an all-star game today in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Bothell HIgh teammate Colin Porter , who is also set to sign with UW, also played in the game on the offensive line. Here are the final expanded stats for the game. IN OTHER NEWS. … — UW DT Cameron Elisara finished 13th in the shot put at the UW Invitational indoor track meet today with a throw of 49 feet, seven inches. — This blog post from the LA Times notes that LB Josh Shirley isn’t expected to announce his college decision until at least noon, when he’s set to do it on live TV in the southern California area. UW has slated its signing day press conference for noon — coaches can’t talk about players until they sign. Hard to know if it means anything that UW’s press conference apparently will run at the same time, meaning UW coach Steve Sarkisian would be talking to the media before Shirley is apparently set to make his call. Shirley is thought to have narrowed his list to UW, USC, Arizona and Miami. Scout.com reports he is taking his visit to Miami this weekend. — Ken Goe of The Oregonian leads off his daily Pac-10 links by applauding the moves in Washington D.C. to look further into the BCS. (My take? If college football needs politicians to fix it then it’s really in trouble. Getting all of them involved just sounds like a way to make things worse). All for now.

Local angler gives his view of salmon fishing through cartoons

It is always nice to add a little humor to our fishing days, and Frank Hunt who lives on Camano Island, drew up a funny cartoon related to salmon fishing. “He has always joked about the guys who have all these theories about when to fish (by tides, moon, rain, temperature, etc.); yet he still catches more fish than any other person I’ve met,” said son-in-law Ray Makela. “I think his cartoons say it all.” Hunt who is 72 years old, and has been fishing for more than 65 years. He is the current leader of the Elger Bay Salmon Derby with 15 blackmouth caught and also has the largest fish on the board, a 16 pounder.

Thursday afternoon notes — Young expected to make unofficial visit this weekend

A few Thursday afternoon notes, leading off with the news that Auburn High’s Chris Young is expected to make an unofficial visit to UW this weekend, and including the thoughts of ESPN’s recruiting analysts on where Sean Parker may be headed. … — First, Young. I spoke to his coach at Auburn High, Gordon Elliott , who said Young is expected to make an unofficial visit to UW this weekend. Young, a running back/safety/linebacker prospect took the SAT for the first time last weekend but getting a score back this quickly would be hard to do — you need an official score to take an official visit. So Elliott said he thought it would be an unofficial visit. But Young is expected to be on campus this weekend. Elliott said UW running backs coach Joel Thomas is expected to visit Auburn High on Friday. Elliott said Young had been scheduled to take the SAT two earlier times but hadn’t been able to, but did get it done last weekend. When Young does get his score back it will put into clearer focus whether he will make it to UW next fall — eligibility works on a a sliding scale of SAT score and GPA. “He has some work to do to get where he needs to be,” Elliott said. “Some of that depends on his SAT score. But he’s doing better and he’s been working really hard to get to that point. he dug himself quite a whole when he was young and he’s still trying to dig himself out of it. Hopefully by the end of the year he’ll be where he needs to be.” But Elliott said there is no question that Young will sign with UW on Wednesday. Taking an unofficial visit means Young can be shown around campus by coaches, attend the basketball game, but can’t be put up for the night in a hotel or wined and dined as could happen on an official visit. — Another player still rumored to be considering UW is cornerback Sean Parker of Narbonne High in Harbor City, Calif. Parker is reported to be down to USC, Michigan, Cal and UW. However, two recruiting experts on ESPNU each said today they expect Parker to look somewhere other than Washington. Craig Haubert said he thinks Parker will decide on Michigan while Tom Luginbill said he thinks Parker will end up at USC. Said Luginbill: “This is Lane Kiffin’s first test of continuing the dominance in the state of California. This is a key pickup for them with their future establishing relationships in the state.” — UW is also hosting some juniors this weekend and Auburn High lineman Danny Shelton , expected to be among the top recruits in the state for the Class of 2011, was among those invited. But Elliott said he will not be able to attend due to a wrestling commitment. — ESPN.com’s Ted Miller is revising his list of the top 30 Pac-10 players for 2009 and has Donald Butler at No. 24. — Speaking of Butler, RealGM.com says he is the best LB at playing pass coverage at the Senior Bowl, while Danny O’Neil of our staff also wrote this today about him. All for now.

All coastal beachs except for Long Beach will be open for razor clam digging

Coastal razor clam diggers are breathing a sigh of relief after state Fish and Wildlife approved digging on four beaches. Last week, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP), a marine toxin, had gone above the cutoff threshold at Long Beach, which canceled the dig there. Testing taken on Tuesday at other beaches were still below the cutoff so digging will proceed at Twin Harbors from Thursday to Sunday, Mocrocks and Copalis will be open Friday to Sunday, and Kalaloch will be open Saturday and Sunday. Digging is allowed between noon and midnight each day. PSP is a marine toxin produced by a certain type of algae that can cause paralysis and in some cases can lead to death if consumed in sufficient quantities. PSP had been detected in clams on the Oregon coast where beaches had been closed since December. No coastal beaches have been closed to razor-clam digging because of elevated PSP levels since 1993, Ayres said. A different marine toxin, domoic acid, prompted a season-long closure in 2002-03. More testing on clams will be conducted in the weeks to come, and if clams are safe for eating then more digs will occur next month.
